In Spring 2026, VEST surveyed the UCSC campus community about transportation and the proposed parking rate increases. The findings below draw on 495 completed responses and point to a consistent story: the proposed changes would land hardest on the people least able to absorb them.
Most respondents (69%) say the increases would strain them financially — rising to 76% among off-campus commuters, the group most dependent on driving. Opposition is targeted rather than blanket: the community supports funding commuter programs, Safe Ride, and walk/bike infrastructure, but strongly opposes using new revenue for past construction debt and central administrative costs. And transportation is already a daily stressor — 57% rate their commute stress a 6 or higher out of 10.
